Country information
Best time to go
Vacation season opens early spring - April and runs through to mid-October. Some say the best months to travel are between mid-April to mid-June. You will enjoy peace and quiet as the tourist crowds have not arrived as yet (JUL-AUG). Just watch out for the Easter Weekend, as this is the most important religious weekend on the Greek Calendar.
Food & drink
The basic ingredients for a meal are bread – grains – potatoes – rice and of course olive oil. Eggplants, cucumbers, tomatoes, spinach, and lentils also form part of the staple diet. Greeks don’t eat to live but rather live to eat.
Culture and Language
Traditions are still strong in Greece and are to be respected, especially in rural areas. Smoking is prohibited in public. Since ancient times, Greeks have been known for their hospitality and laid-back mannerisms. However, family values always come first. Greek is the official language but note that half of Greece’s population understands English
Getting around
The most traditional way of travel to/from the Islands is by ferry. It is such an enjoyable experience and not to be missed. When travelling by car, always remember that lanes may be narrow and may have hairpin bends. On most islands, one can rent a motorbike and is the best way to explore off-beat places. Always wear a helmet. (Present your driver’s license at the Rental station and make sure you have Travel Insurance)
Tipping
Included in your restaurant bill, ranging between 10 & 12%. Check the bill first before adding some extra. Housecleaning, bell boys and concierge would appreciate a tip if their service has been up to standards
Favorite Dishes
It is a tradition to eat in Greece. Look out for a Taverna if you want to have a traditional meal. The servings are generous, and you will enjoy the traditional settings. Meals are simple and are prepared with seasonal produce, olive oil and grills
