Itinerary

Day 4

Siem Reap – Outlying Temples and Kulen Mountain/Waterfall (B/L)

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • After breakfast we leave for a 1.5 hour drive north of Siem Reap that will bring us to Phnom Kulen; which provides Siem Reap with water and dominates the skyline of the flat plains surrounding it.
  • Although the highest peak of the mountain range lies at only 487m; Phnom Kulen has much to offer visitors.
  • The Cambodian people regard the site as the birthplace of the ancient Khmer Empire.
  • Visit the eight meter long statue of a reclining Buddha and wash your hands at the Linga statue to purify your mind and body.
  • Continue to visit the River of One Thousand Lingas and the magnificent waterfall close to it.
  • Take a refreshing dip in the stream and pool of the waterfall.
  • On the way back; enjoy lunch in the garden at Bong Thom House.
  • Afterwards; visit the jewel of Khmer art; Banteay Srei temple. Its red sand-stone walls are decorated with elaborate carvings in an amazing state of preservation.
  • This evening; enjoy dinner with an Apsara dance performance at Apsara Terrace in Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor. Set in the cozy atmosphere and performed on the garden stage; this is a unique and wonderful dining experience featuring an Asian Barbecue buffet.
  • Overnight at your hotel in Siem Reap.
Day 5

Siem Reap – Remote Temple & Lunch at local house (B/L)

  • After breakfast; you will visit Wat Damnak; one of Siem Reap’s most beautiful pagodas.
  • The French colonial architecture reflects its history and serene-looking Buddhist statues positioned around the spacious grounds create a tranquil atmosphere.
  • Bring candles and incense sticks to the pagoda to participate in a private blessing ceremony; performed by the resident monks.
  • Sit on a hand-woven mat while the monks chant ritual blessings and sprinkle holy water (believed to offer good luck) before tying a sacred thread around your wrist.
  • The monks will offer you a small keepsake to remind you of this special moment.
  • We leave for a 1.5 hour drive through the Cambodian countryside to reach the sprawling jungle temple of Beng Mealea; constructed in a distinctly Angkor Wat style by King Suyavarman II in the early 12th century;
  • Beng Mealea preceded and may have served as a prototype for Angkor Wat. Today the temple is largely overrun by vegetation and the stone walls are crumbling which adds to its charm in a unique way.
  • Accessibility has improved as elevated walkways have been set up throughout most of the temple; although to see all corners does require a sense of adventure as you will need to climb over stone blocks or walk through narrow passageways.
  • Visit the floating village of Kampong Khleang; one of the largest settlements on the Tonle Sap Lake. Living on water is an art the Khmer people have mastered over the course of time.
  • Board a local boat and visit a floating house where a picnic lunch is set up for you.
  • Observe the local customs and talk with your hosts about the difficulties they face living on the water.
  • After lunch we continue exploring the small island; which is home to a bustling market; a pagoda; a school and a health centre before returning to Siem Reap.
  • Overnight at your hotel in Siem Reap.

Country information

  • Best time to travel to Cambodia
Tourist season runs from November to March, but Cambodia is warm throughout the year and temperatures do not go below 20C. If you prefer lesser crowds, opt to travel between May to early October
  • Cambodia Culture and Greetings
Cambodians are a mixture of Hinduism and Buddhism. The country’s golden age between the 9th and 14th Century is better known as the Khmer Empire era. During this time, Cambodia achieved unparalleled achievements in the arts and architecture and Angkor Wat is your perfect example.
When you greet someone, press your hands together in front of your chest.
  • Drinks & Food
The basis of any Cambodian meal is rice, served either sticky or jasmine rice grown in the many paddy fields.
Noodle soup is very common, and you will find that French food is still readily available. Don’t be surprised to find a coffee and “baguette sandwich” snack option. Roadside street food stalls are fun to try but rather sticks to the busy stalls serving piping hot foods
  • Discover your environment
Taxi hire is available in all major cities. They are not metered so fix the rate in advance. Tips will be appreciated by the driver. Not to be missed is a ride in a tuk-tuk.
  • Tipping
Locals rarely tip, however, tourist like to add 10% which is appropriate especially in restaurants where no service charge is added to the bill
  • Local interesting meals:
Babor: Rice porridge with chicken broth
Kralan: Sticky rice flavored with sugar, beans and grated coconut steamed inside a Bamboo pole
Mee Katang: Cantonese styled wild rice cooked with meat and vegetables served with an oyster sauce
Fresh Coconut Juice: a refreshing and popular drink
Beer: Angkor and Anchor are the largest lagers served
